Lara Wetlands is a bush camping ground on a cattle station south of Barcaldine. The wetlands are fed by a century old artesian bore and the unpowered camping is quite delightful. The water is quite shallow and full of dead timber but provides a wonderful habitat for over 118 species of birds.
This camping spot is on a working cattle station. If you are travelling with a pet it MUST be kept on a leash at all times at this campground. There is a artesian thermal pool at Lara.
It is an idyllic bush camp-spot that is well set up around the wetlands that has abundant bird life & wildlife and is a photographers joy.
Sunrise and Sunset’s are just amazing with the reflections on the water.
There are unlimited tranquil shady unpowered campsites around the wetlands, that welcomes all van sizes, motor homes and tents.
Many stop for a night or two and stay for a week or longer. Camp fees are per person or per couple per night, there is a nightly family package available, and no Eftpos facilities as the mobile phone range is limited. The large camp kitchen can cater for large groups and is located by the natural thermal Artesian pool and kids playground. We have a children’s thermal swimming hole also, free kayaks and a couple of kids bicycles to help entertain the young ones.
